Driver Education Course
Road Sense Australia delivers accredited community-based driver education courses and online educational programs that help participants become safer drivers.
Road Sense Australia provides driver education courses designed for road safety and responsible driving behaviours. We combine a cognitive behavioural approach with reality-based learning, giving you the information and skills necessary to develop positive attitudes towards driving and to become a safer, more responsible road user.
What is the Driver Education Course?
The Driver Education Course (DEC) is also known as the Traffic Offender Intervention Program (TOIP). It targets road safety and responsible driving behaviours for drivers who repeatedly exceed the demerit points limit for their licence in accordance with penalties introduced from 1 February 2015.
These stronger penalties target drivers who repeatedly take risks and put others in serious danger. They aim to ensure that drivers understand the road rules and the risks of unsafe driving, and change their behaviour.
Unrestricted licence holders who exceed their demerit points limit twice in five years must re-sit and pass the Driver Knowledge Test and complete a Driver Education Course. The Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) will refer DEC candidates to Road Sense and they will receive the certificate of completion which will need to be taken back to the RMS.

Take the Driver Education Course Online
You can register to complete your Driver Education Course online. Once you register, you will be emailed access within 1-2 business hours. Your access to the online program is for 1 month from the date that is provided with the material. Our online program lets you save your progress and return to it later, you can do that as many times as you like.
We also understand that sometimes life gets busy, so if 1 month of access is not long enough to complete the online program, just let us know and we’ll extend it! Upon completion, we will report back to the Court on your behalf (TOIP referral) and your certificate will be emailed out to the Court and you (and your lawyer if you have one).
If we are reporting back to the Roads and Maritime Services on your behalf (DEC referral) then unfortunately the RMS will not accept an electronic copy of your certificate. This means that if you are completing the program online we will post you the certificate.
Frequently Asked Questions
As of 1 February 2015, unrestricted licence holders who exceed their demerit points limit twice in five years must re-sit and pass the Driver Knowledge Test and complete a Driver Education Course.
The Roads and Maritime Services will refer Driver Education Course candidates to Road Sense and they will be required to complete our TOIP.
At Road Sense Australia our program is divided into 10 modules covering a variety of different subjects.
You can choose to do our program in a classroom, online via Zoom, or a combination of these, and you can split it up over multiple weeks, or do it all in one go.
The choice is yours.
At Road Sense our TOIP takes about 6 hours to complete, regardless of your choice of delivery option – classroom, via Zoom, online or a combination of these. With online delivery, you can access the program for 1 month from the date that the material is provided, you can also extend your access by contacting us.
If you are interested in enrolling in our TOIP book here. Our programs sell out and we are constantly adding new dates and closing off full programs, so, unfortunately, we can’t publish all of our dates because by the time we do, we probably would have added more.
If it has been more than 1 business day since you registered for TOIP and you have not received your access, please go to our online learning portal www.learning.roadsense.org.au and if we have enrolled you into the program already, you will be able to log in using the email address that you provided us when you registered.
If you have not received an email providing you access to the online material and it has been longer than 1 business day then in most cases your email system sent it straight into your spam/junk folder. Please note, that during busy periods it may take a little longer for us to email you.
If we are reporting back to the Court on your behalf (TOIP referral) then your certificate will be emailed out to the Court and you (and your lawyer if you have one) on the day that you complete the program. If you are doing the program face-to-face that means the emails will be sent on the day that you attend. If you are doing the final part of TOIP online, then as soon as we mark your assessments (we ask for a 2 day turn around) then the emails will be sent off.
If we are reporting back to the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) on your behalf (DEC referral) then, unfortunately, the RMS will not accept an electronic copy of your certificate. This means that if you are completing the program face-to-face we simply hand you the certificate on the day of completion and you take it to the RMS or if you are completing the final part online we will post you the certificate.
After submitting your assessments (online) you should allow us 2 days to mark your answers and then another couple of days for the RMS certificate to arrive in the mail. You will be informed when your answers are marked and the certificate has been sent.
Our program costs $170 to complete. As a not-for-profit all of our proceeds go back into the community to fund driver education programs for the most vulnerable and the underprivileged.
No TOIP provider can guarantee you a lesser sentence because you complete their program. We highly recommend that you question the credibility of any TOIP provider that tells you that doing their course will get you a lesser sentence.
There are there are many variables that can affect your sentence:
- Your driving history
- The circumstances surrounding your offence
- Your attitude towards the police / law enforcement
- How you act at Court
- What you have learnt from your experiences and from completing TOIP
- Your lawyer
The Magistrate will take these factors and others into consideration at the time of handing down their sentence. It is only the Magistrate that can determine your sentence.
However, there are things that you can do to help your case, and in addition to completing TOIP, having a great lawyer is a good place to start. You need to be open and honest with them about everything and they will try to use the law to your advantage. That is why we partner with a number of leading law firms that are available to offer you free legal advice, with no obligation.
